Komarnica – the hidden canyon of the North

It’s no secret that northern Montenegro is an endless source of natural beauty, much of which remains either little known or yet to be discovered. One such hidden gem is the Komarnica River Canyon.

The Komarnica River springs from beneath the Durmitor Saddle, in an area known as Dragišnica. What sets it apart from other mountain rivers in Montenegro is the impressive canyon that stretches along its entire course, completely untouched by human influence.

Nevidio – the most impressive part of the Komarnica Canyon

Komarnica has carved one of the most beautiful canyons in the Balkans. Its most famous section is the Nevidio Canyon, a natural phenomenon that was only discovered in the mid-20th century. Nevidio Canyon stretches for about 3.8 kilometers, and in some areas, its depth reaches up to 450 meters. This remarkable spot has become a favorite among adventurers and extreme canyoning enthusiasts.

The legend of Nevidio Canyon

Locals often refer to this canyon as “Neviđ Bog,” which roughly translates to “God has not seen,” because, until 1965, they say even God hadn’t seen its interior. Nevidio was the only unconquered canyon in Europe until 1965, when a group of mountaineers from Nikšić, members of the “Javorak” society, successfully explored it, shattering the myth of the unconquerable “Neviđ Bog.” Their names are now part of history, and the testimony of one of the canyon’s “conquerors” can be read here: https://www.dan.co.me/turizam/video-na-danasnji-dan-prije-58-godina-osvojen-kanjon-nevidio-5190628.

Komarnica and its Nevidio Canyon remain one of the most impressive natural wonders of northern Montenegro. Untouched and mysterious, this mountain river offers an experience that combines peace, adventure, and awe for nature, leaving every visitor breathless.
